How Do Blackjack Tournaments Work

Blackjack tournaments are famous since the early 2000s and there was a big boom in it during those years but now they are seeing a return and people are getting more interested in them. How do blackjack tournaments work is a question that needs to be answered in a detailed manner so when you go there then you are all ready for it, thus we will answer it for you in the best manner possible?

How do Blackjack Tournaments Operate?

The contestants are given a table, that table is there for them and their foes or a less extreme word, a competitor. The bankrolls are the same initially for all players. The player then plays blackjack according to its rule (we have assumed you know the rules of blackjack because if we start explaining then the focus of the article will go to the wrong side). The winner at the end of the game is the one with the highest amount of money.

But there is more than one such table and on each table, there is fierce competition. The winners of the tables (there are 6 or 7 in most blackjack tournaments) then face off against each other in a final battle to be crowned the winner of the blackjack tournament.

The competition here is very fierce and it is not an easy task to win against seasoned opponents, as this time you are not against the house or the dealer like traditional blackjack but your opponent is another player, and it makes blackjack tournaments one of the most thrilling competitions in the world of gambling.

Types of Blackjack Tournaments

There are two types of tables that you should be aware of, the single table tournaments that finish off quickly and at the end, there is one winner without eliminations, while another type is known as the multip blackjack table where all the other players are eliminated with the remaining one player being the winner.

Thus you can see that there can be two types of blackjack tournaments, an elimination blackjack tournament and a non-elimination one.

A player (or top two players in some cases) with the most money advances to the next table in the elimination format. Those at the table other than the table’s owner are eliminated from the competition (hence the name “elimination format”).

An elimination-free tournament involves players competing against each other over a few rounds with the aim of winning the most money. Players are not eliminated from this format. The elimination tournament is the more popular of the two formats.

The Entry Fee

The majority of the blackjack tournaments will charge you an entry fee to get back their operational costs and make something out of the whole setup of the competition. This can easily be obtained by visiting the websites of the casino where such an event is taking place or by calling their customer support and enquiring from them.

The prize pool is very important and how many players share it. You need to be aware of this very important detail about the blackjack tournaments as it determines the element of risk involved for you and as well as the payout. The more the players the lesser the chances of winning generally but it doesn’t hold true in all scenarios, for example, there is more player but the prize pool is greater then it will be a better blackjack tournament than the one’s where the prize pool is low with fewer players.

Here is an example for you about the prize pools and how the entry fee works in regards to that:

Other Important Aspects

A tournament may not return a full 100%, but the participants may get a free hotel room, a free meal, or even a tournament gift. When computing the overall return percentage, you may have to consider the value of these freebies. This is a very good thing to see because this acts as a recreational perk if you don’t win but remember higher the fee more than the perks, don’t expect such perks from a low-level tournament with a lower fee.

You can ask the marketing department of the casino for the details if you have difficulty determining the return percentage. Do not settle for anything less than a 100 percent return tournament, as there are plenty of them. Yes don’t settle, we are reaping don’t settle. The reason is that there is constant competition and it is mostly cutthroat between the casinos, and at the advantage is the customer. So pick your tournament wisely and never ever settle for less than 100% unless the payout is so high that it is almost impossible for you to say no to it.

In some tournaments, you must put up your own money as a bankroll. Other tournaments use special chips (which are free). In most tournaments with large cash prizes, players must bankroll each round, but this is not always the case. It is vital because on the table the flow of cash determines the smooth outcome of the game and in the casino business each night the clash flow determines its performance and then evaluation.

Elimination tournaments are played in several different ways. To gain an early lead in the round, some players bet big from the start. Those who prefer to bet conservatively usually wait for the right time to make their move with larger bets. The latter approach would be my recommendation.

The more rounds progressives progress, the more important it becomes to determine how much money each player has (chips). You should bet differently from the leader if you want to catch up. When you lag behind the leader by $400and he wagers $600, how much would you wager to catch up? There is no point in betting less than $400or more than $800. You will be ahead if both of you bet $810 and win the hand. If you both lose the hand and you bet less than $400, you will be ahead.

As a leading player, you should match the bets of players attempting to catch you. Thus, even if you lose or win, you will still hold the lead. This is an evergreen strategy that is used by players since the inception of the blackjack tournaments.

It is the last hands that matter most. A lot of players lose round after round because they place the wrong bet in the final few hands. You bet in different ways depending on whether you are ahead or behind and whether you are betting first or last. Players tend to take an all-or-nothing approach to tournaments and will make the maximum bet on the last hand if that is what is needed to win. The player who has to bet first must make the maximum bet if he or she wins the hand. If both players can make the maximum bet, then both players should bet the maximum amount. In the event that no other player can beat your winnings by putting all their chips on the last hand, make the minimum bet. Last on the final hand is the best position to be in. If they win the final hand, this allows you to calculate how much the bankroll would be for them assuming they won. Taking that into account, should you also win the final hand, you will need more money to bet.

Another tip. It is not uncommon for players to make extremely strange plays to gain an advantage over the leader on the last hand. It is not uncommon for players to double down on 10/7 for example, to get more money on the table to catch the leader. What do you think of this? One of my fellow players doubled down on a blackjack hand when I lost the very first tournament offered in Atlantic City. While he didn’t win enough on his blackjack to overtake me, he did win enough on a double down (yes, he drew a picture card for 21 and beat the dealer). By the way, if you plan on playing blackjack in the future, don’t do this kind of play because it’s an illegal move.

In some casinos, players can enter inexpensive tournaments and play with tournament chips for less than $50. It is a good way to try out tournament blackjack and get a feel for what it’s all about. In order to prepare yourself for more expensive tournaments, you can download Tournament Blackjack from Stanford Wong. The software program allows you to practice and improve your tournament skills on your PC.
